This award is presented annually to an RC&D council that exemplifies the spirit of the RC&D by “Making Things Happen” in its area.
Mid-South RC&D Council, Alabama
This year’s awardee scored very high in all six categories that are considered in selecting the winner of this award. A few of the highlights of their application include:
- This council does an excellent job of nonprofit management using a fail-safe system of checks and balances, an independent bookkeeper and independent attorney, and elects new officers every other year.
- Projects undertaken in 2011 show a wide range of needs with unique solutions that can be adopted in other areas. A few of these include: an eight-grade robotics classes mentoring program for academic excellence and citizenship skills; a physical education pilot program to combat obesity in elementary schools; a senior high biodiesel lab for converting cooking oil to diesel fuel; and vision screenings as a partner in the Blackbelt Adult Eye Care Consortium.
- Their Board composition exactly mirrors the population of the area and many of their its projects they undertake effectively deal with the problems of the under-served.
