Our FFA Alumni Intern Program
June 2013- We are happy to introduce you to Blair Long, our first Future Famer of America (FFA) Alumni Summer Intern. Blair is currently a junior at South Dakota State University majoring in Agriculture Education, Communications, and Leadership. She is also a member of the Women’s Division I Equestrian Team where she rides horses at the varsity level. She grew up in Dayton, Virginia and was an active participant in her high school’s FFA chapter where her passion for agriculture began.
When asked why Blair wanted to intern with the NARC&DC this summer she stated that “I love working with younger children as well as exploring the outdoors; hiking, camping, and fishing. Coming from a rural town and going to an agricultural school, I have learned a lot about the importance of agriculture and our environment. When given the opportunity to work with the NARC&DC, I was able to see how communities from across the nation come together to help improve environments and preserve natural resources.”
In Blair’s short time here she has helped the NARC&DC kick-off our 2013 Partnership Alliance membership drive and has learned a great deal about the RC&D Councils. She sees a logical fit between the local RC&D Councils and programs such as FFA. “There are so many great projects happening right now around the nation, but in order to keep this program up to date and alive, we need to involve our youth! Working together with local FFA or 4H programs is a great way to extend volunteer service and ‘Make Things Happen,’ said Blair. “In my short experience here with NARC&DC, I learned so much and am ready to take it all back and incorporate concepts into my future agriculture classroom.”
Blair and the NARC&DC would like to encourage all RC&D Councils to consider bringing a local high school or college intern into their organization to learn about what RC&D Councils do and to help spread the word!
“There are many ways a RC&D Council can host an Intern, even if it is only for a few weeks.” reminded Andy Gordon, NARC&DC’s Executive Director. “The FFA has a great network of eager youth willing to help. Some interns may live near your RC&D office or be able to help from far away using a computer. Financial reimbursement is not always a must; an intern might just be looking for career experience.
